I've printed out all my envelopes for Christmas cards and set up my Christmas card group in my address book but now if I want to send and email to a friend from my All Contact list from my IPod it addresses the email with the formal address Mr. & Mrs...instead of just the person's name. Is there any way of my keeping my contacts in this group with just there first and last names? Please help. Thanks

Many of my contacts have multiple addresses. When I print labels for a group, it creates a label for each address. Is there a way to specify, in this case, only the home address to print?

Like many of you, I use Apple's Address Book for doing my Christmas lists. Here's two things I do that I think work really well:

1. Create a Smart Group that consists of all contacts with "Christmas" in the notes field. It's easy to add and remove this to the notes field throughout the year. I don't have to think to drag them in/out of a regular Group.

2. I use the Nickname field to enter how I want the Christmas card addressed. So if I have a friend named Mary Smith. Her husband is under the spouse field as "John." But under Nickname I can choose to have "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" or "The Smith Family" or whatever seems right for them. I tend to be more formal with my elders but more casual for my peers. You do have to enter a nickname for each of your contacts -- but you only have to do it once and then it appears exactly like you want it to print.

To add the Nickname field to your Address Book contacts, go to Card > Add Field and select it. It will appear directly underneath their name when you are in the edit mode for the card. When you are out of edit mode, it will appear like the nickname has quotes around it; those won't show when you use it.

To use the nickname field in an Apple Pages Mail Merge document, go to Insert > Merge Field > Related Name > Nick Name (yes somehow it became two words). Being able to use the Nick Name field makes it totally worth it to use Pages to print my Christmas envelopes. I can change the font/color too. You also get a completely editable document to which you can make any last minute changes (but if your Address Book is correct you shouldn't have to make any changes to the document).

Good luck!

From the version of address book I have, it is providing me with a drop down to the selection of addresses that are attached to my "me" card in Address Book. To find this, search on your own name, or the name of the user attached to the account you logged in to the computer with.

Thank you for the reply, Vincent. However, my question is the same as that of David from October 5, ie: >>>>Anybody know how to add a return address to the Address Book. I have one specified but cannot find out how to add another. The Help file says:
Click Label and then specify whether to include your return address and which address to use for it.
This implies I can have more than one and then make a choice, but I cannot find out how to add a second one (or remember how I designated the first one).<<<<

I don't recall setting up my return address in the first place, and don't know where to find the "me" personal profile that you directed me to - sorry, need more clarification?

Thanks much!

The return address could be coming from the "me" personal profile in the address. Try editing that.

Stephen - Rather than trying to second guess the printer. I would print all of them, having put in as many envelopes as the printer can do. When out of envelopes, simply put in more and the printer should be able t carry on. You need not do them in batches. Vincent =

So I created a group to mail my Christmas cards. My printer does not hold all of the envelopes so I printed 1-18 (the number of envelopes per package of cards) and it printed correctly. Next I inserted the next group of envelopes and told it to print 19-36. It printed 3 duplicates of #28 name/address and 2 of 23. An attempt to print from 31 to 47 began by printing 2 duplicates of #28 again before I could stop it. What is wrong?

Totally totally totally confusing confusing confusing. I have a 2008 macBook Pro. Trying to figure out how to print one envelope to send a resume in, is like trying to crack the Da Vinci code. With MS Word, you just choose "envelopes," type in the address and click print. With a Mac, you have to go to computer college for 6 years, install programs and open up a hundred applications just to print one envelope. Because with Mac's, we DON'T give you basic things you NEED, but we do give you things you don't need.

Your article says: "The print dialog window should display by default in envelope printing mode," NOPE - it does NOT. No envelope.
" if it does not, then from the “Style” drop menu to the top right hand side" - THERE IS NO "style" menu on mine.
"select “Envelopes”- NO SUCH OPTION on mine.
I'm left to figure out the "Address Book" program which I've now spent close to 2 hours, I just want to print one envelope, that's all. Don't need to create any names or groups and don't need to save anything. It does not give any envelope setting, tried searching all applications, no possible clue how to print an envelope. And nothing else on the internet. Boy I miss MS Word, I could print an envelope in 10 seconds.

Does anyone know how I can format envelope printing to print a clients position in their company. I can get their name and their company, address etc but not their position or department. These are all in the Address Book entries but I can not find any way of adding them to my envelope template. Thanks in advance I hope.

Would love Apple to cater for people using their gear in business.

I'm old and I have used the MAC for years, finally had to break down and get a new one, system 10. I desperately needed to get a business mailing out for a group that I had always done with my Appleworks program. The new Mac system wouldn't take my old mailing list, so I had to retype it . When I tried to print it as labels and later a list, I couldn't find any info on "how to". I called the MAC store where I got the computer and they said I would have to buy a compatible program to get labels! I was googling for a program when up popped your site!!! with the answer to my problem. It is very easy, but without your articles I'd have spent more money on something I didn't need. Thank you, thank you, thank you !

8 months after fiddling with labels in Address Book to get holiday cards out (by adding spouse names in the First Name field) but in curiosity and anticipation of next holiday season, I messed around with Address Book, Entourage and Mail Merge Manager using Excel and Word. Lo and behold, Word actually has a super easy way to make editable labels. Open a new document, open Mail Merge Manager under Tools, Create New: Labels. Then under the Select Recipients List, there is an option to use Apple Address Book as your data source. Yay! If you've made a group in Address Book, say Holiday 2011, you can select just that group. It then lets you place fields the way you would like them on the labels. I too wanted to include spouse/partner's names. Just add the "Spouse/Partner" field. Under "Complete Merge," select "Merge to New Document." When the merge is completed, you have an easily editable document. For example, if spouses/partners have different last names, you can move both first and last name of the spouse to after "and." If they have the same last name, you can put an "&" between the two first names--or however you prefer. You could also delete first names and type in "The... Family" when you know all their kids. Very excited about this for the next go round!

I am working on printing out labels for my Christmas cards. I created a "group" called "Christmas Cards" in my Address Book program and I am using Avery 5160 labels. I can see the pdf of the sheet that will eventually be printed. I am 99.99% of the way there but for one seemingly insurmountable problem: I want to EDIT the labels before printing. I don't want to make any permanent changes to my contacts though. For example, if my contacts name is John Smith, I want to make sure that the Christmas card goes out to his wife as well (i.e. I want the label to read John and Mary Smith). I have opened the PDF drop-down box to review my labels in Preview, but Preview doesn't allow me to edit them. I have tried to save the sheet as a PDF file and open in Adobe Reader 9 and then edit there, but Adobe Reader 9 does not let me edit. What can I do? Is there any way I can edit these labels before printing? I love my MacBook Pro and I have come to depend on the intuitive nature of Apple's software, but this problem is baffling me! Surely, the smart folks at Apple have anticipated this issue and have a ready solution. I just don't know what that solution is. Anybody have any good advise?

I am trying to print my Christmas labels on Staples brand labels (Avery 5162) using Address Book. I have figured everything else out except when my labels print, the first six are fine but then the last few labels print high on the label and some of the letters get cut off! Any ideas anyone?
