    FTP Access Problems in CPanel

Just a quick note on FTP access in CPanel and post server transfer problems.  If you have moved over from a BSD system, or other to say, Red Hat Linux, RHEL or Centos, then you may find that account holders will have problems logging in via FTP.

This won’t affect the main account FTP, but f you have users added in the FTP Accounts section of CPanel that are linked to the old home directory structure, e.g. /usr/home versus /home, then you will need to delete the user and then recreate it with the correct directory.

The symptoms displayed by the server will be that any main account login will work fine, whilst logins such as USER@DOMAIN will not, and that the server will throw an error and close the connection, leaving the FTP app to return with a response “Server Closed Connection” or that “User Requires Password“.

Personally, I had problems troubleshooting, not just because of an unexpected error after a second server move in more than 3 years, where apparently things just worked on my previous RHEL box, but that firefox ont he computer i was using to troubleshoot exhibits odd behavior whereby it doesn’t respect browser meta refresh code and so the CPanel FTP Accounts page for the domain was not loading. In addition I had come across posts that mentioned software firewall issues, but of course mine persisted even after I had disabled the firewall temporarily.

Anyhow, there you have it. The sweet and the short.
