CBS Scores Own Goal with cbseyemobile.com

It seems that, even in this day and age, there is something to be said for editorial content and editorial input. Case in point is cbsmobileeye.com the CBS created user generated news web site recently rolled out by CBS corp. To quote a piece from Advertising Age:

Karl Johnson, chief operating officer of BrandContent, a Boston-based agency, uploaded the app last night and saw a picture of a young woman bent over her kitchen stove, her skirt hiked up. Later he saw video of three women performing sexual acts on one another.

People do seem to have a very funny idea of of “news” as ad age quite rightly points out also.  As all “web 2.0″ sites quickly find out, much to their chagrin, user generated content ain’t necessarily all that.

Social media is all and well, but when it is used in irresponsable hands, which cannot be gloated over, mediated, moderated and censored 24/7 then it can quickly get to a point where a few individuals make a mockery otu of it, with even greater purpose and reaosn when they are trying to fell a giant such as CBS Corp.

As Karl Johnson points out later in the piece:

I think not. It doesn’t seem consistent with CBS brand image by any stretch of the imagination.

And I am sure that their clients would concur, those paying many a media dollar to have such things associated with their brand too. Time to go back to the drawing board I think.
