Automatically Save Files in OSX with SaveCircle
You quickly learn the mantra as a developer or designer that you should “save early, and save often”. This might be easier said than done when applications either don’t have an auto-save function, or, if saving means that you wait for the best part of 30 minutes to write a high-res file with gigs of swap in Photoshop to the hard disk. Irrespective of the conundrum, you can now auto-save files using a nifty new app called
SaveCircle.
SaveCircle to the Rescue
Licensed as donationware, and developed by french dev Gabriel Nion, SaveCircle takes the hassle out of the remembering to save files as you work. In fact it’s so easy to use, you can download the app and be up and running in a matter of minutes. Making it super simple to get from zero to saving every 5 minutes with ease.
Once you have reached the SaveCircle Main Window you are ready to go. The auto-save time countdown starts at 5 minutes, but can be reduced or increased as necessary. Select the specific app or the selection of applications and then just flip the switch.
Once the countdown has reached zero the select application or apps will either auto-save, or produce a dialog window requesting that you save the new document to a desired location. Using the SaveCircle app really couldn’t be more simple.
Other Functions
SaveCircle is design with simplicity in mind and so pretty much just does what it “says on the tin”. Beyond the main window though you can configure a range of options including, but not limited to: using sound alerts, growl notifications, changing interface elements, ativity logging, detaching the countdown screen and hiding the main window, and toggling updates.
Conclusion: An Insurance Policy
This isn’t just an application for geriartrics trying to remember to save the stuff they are working on, it’s tantamount to an insurance policy for your work when a Mac crashes, the power goes out, or OSX has a kernel panic.
